A custom made profile is an information table of analysis of the color numbers stored in an ICC file, for specific printer with its internal variations taken into the equation. In simple words it is the analysis of the particular printer with the particular ink printed on the particular kind of paper.
The custom made profile asures that the printer will receive the correct color numbers from the source to destination. During every printing process the color management engine looks at the source profile numbers (ex. sRGB, Adobe RGB, Kodak prophoto) and translates those to the output profile.
Custom made profile solves one of the biggest problem of any printer - "the problem of outside of colorspace colors". It is when those colors that is outside of the colorspace of your printer gets to be printed very spotty, edgy, with obviously incorrect colors. The custom-made profile will remap this colors to colors that are most near to the original colors automaticly, so well so you wouldn't be bothered by this problem any longer. The pictures with "outside of the colorspace colors" will look like those suppose to, while without it you would need to sit and change those colors manually till you make them to look good enough on the print. As you know such procedure waists a lot of ink, paper and time, all of which is waisted money of yours.
To solve all those problems is a very powerful function of a good ICC profile and a profiler!
You may ask why would you buy our custom made profile for your printer when the printer manufacturers are already supplying you with the manufacture profiles for theirs papers? If you have already tried those once - you know the answer! The manufacturer supplied profiles are generic profiles, those are averaged from many (of the same model of the printer) and therefore it will be an averaged color gamut of these printers, which will sacrifice the color gamut and will usually not be very accurate on your specific printer. In such cases shadow details suffers the most and it is almost impossible to get neutral B&W prints. Think of manufacture profile as if you would buy a suit that is said to be your size, which will fit you either bad or good, but never perfect! Think of our custom made profile as if professional tailor would take the unique body measurements of yours and make a custom tailored suit that is meant just for you - it will fit you perfectly, but not only that - it will hide imperfections of your body ideally as well.
